Course Outline

Section One: Theory Training

Trainees participate in a theory class* in which they learn about the rules and theory behind safe forklift operation. Major topics covered are

  • Rules and Regulations
  • Major forklift components and their functions
  • Safe work practices
  • Pre-Shift Inspections
  • Balance and stability principles
  • Safe Driving Practices
  • Fuel and Batteries
  • Site Specific Topics

Section Two: Theory Evaluation

Regulations require all operators to demonstrate their knowledge by completing a theory evaluation. In section 2 trainees complete a written test to show their understanding of forklift theory. Evaluation are graded and reviewed with the trainees. A grad of 70% must be achieved for the trainee to move on to the Practical portion of the course

Section Three: Operational Review

The instructor will review basic operation including

  • Pre-use Inspections
  • Work site awareness with limited visibility
  • Working safely with pedestrians
  • Traveling with and without a load
  • Lifting and Placement of a load
  • Parking and Shut-down procedures
  • Refueling or recharging

Experienced operators will review the forklift operations which takes 20-30 per operator. When the trainee demonstrates understanding of forklift operation and proper safety procedures they move on to the practical evaluation. Should the operator not be able to demonstrate proper operational techniques time will be scheduled for further training and practice.

New operators will be given in depth instruction and time to practice their skills. When the trainee demonstrates understanding of forklift operation and proper safety procedures they move on to the practical evaluation. Should the operator not be able to demonstrate proper operational techniques time will be scheduled for further training and practice.

Section Four: Practical Evaluation

Regulations require each trainee must demonstrate their ability to operate powered mobile equipment before being authorized to do so. The program is completed with a practical evaluation of the trainees skills.

Every trainee performs several tasks while being evaluated by an experienced instructor. Tasks are chosen to challenge the trainee so an accurate assessment of their skill level can be made. Following the evaluation all trainees are debriefed and made aware of their operational strengths and weaknesses.

Those trainees who pass this evaluation and demonstrate operational ability become BC Forklift Safety Certified Operators. Our certification is valid for two years at which time the operator must undergo our refresher training program.

* course length is dependent on class size and each trainee’s ability.
